Join me on my gardening journey!
Getting my hands dirty in the garden has always been one of my most favorite pastimes. Having grown up around plants my whole life, it would only seem natural that I would find comfort in working with plants — outside. My father, a student of horticulture at the University of Kentucky, started his own greenhouse business during his senior year in college. Being in the plant business can be somewhat of a family affair, because as my dad always says “plants never take a vacation,” and so over the years my brothers and I would spend countless hours playing in the greenhouses and surrounding farmland. We even learned how to ride our bikes in the greenhouse, as the long and flat concrete aisles made for a great bike track.
Now that I have children of my own, I hope to continue the family tradition and expose them to the joy that growing plants can provide. In a time when there seem to be so many distractions, my wife and I wanted to provide ample opportunities for our kids to learn what adventure can be had in the backyard. The garden is my escape, but it also the place where I hope to build deep and lasting memories for, and with my kids.
Despite my many years of secondhand gardening experience, and a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, I consider myself an amateur gardener. I love to learn through real-life experiences, and I’ve found gardening is one of the best ways to regularly engage in this type of learning. Throughout the extended period of isolation we found ourselves in during 2020, my desire to share my experiences in the garden with the wider world began to emerge. Thus ‘Dad Gardener’ was born out of two of my biggest passions in life — being a dad and a gardener.
